Birds don’t mind the rain...

Here's a little something I wrote, reflections of time in Knoxville's Old City.

The rain was pouring And I was wandering

Down around Jackson and Central

And the train that morning

Startled lost men without warning

Thinking about you was coincidental

Stained glass women

Tired from last night’s sinnin;

Appreciated the gloom

A kaleidoscope story

A vining morning glory

Weighted by the rain, still bloom

I don’t take the time anymore

To wander by your front door

It’s just you by the the windowpane

Even though you draw me in

It’s just something about us again

And even birds don’t mind the rain

Cars are lined up at the tracks

Someone’s unloading while someone stacks

It just a little time spent waiting

It hasn’t rained like this in 20 years

But any storm is good to hide my tears

And what good is time but for contemplating?

The thunder doesn’t mind the barbershop

They watch the puddles, count the drops

No one really needed a shave today

And the ladies at the costumier sew

There’s not much time left till the show

Maybe a break at the corner cafe

I don’t take the time anymore

To wander by your front door

It’s just you by the the windowpane

Even though you draw me in

It’s just something about us again

And even birds don’t mind the rain

I watch the sparrows along the alley

Whatever shall be, will be

It’s just something I can’t explain

Traffic is moving, not longer caught

Thinking of you and lost in thought

You know, the birds don’t mind the rain

There’s a little nest in the old brick eaves

I get some coffee, don’t know what to believe

It’s been a long time, all over again

The crows caw along the railroad ties

Searching for treasure under cloudy skies

You know, the birds don’t mind the rain

I don’t take the time anymore

To wander by your front door

It’s just you by the the windowpane

Even though you draw me in

It’s just something about us again

And even birds don’t mind the rain

Chaos

I ain’t looking for comfort

In the chaos of kingdoms

Where looking glass contorts

Your heart and your freedom

You had your reasons

And I cast my doubt

In the changing of seasons

Lost and left out

So I wander to still waters

To wrestle with pain

The looking glass blurs

With the falling of rain

I stand by the waters

Like a trestle without train

The looking glass is sure

I’ll not shine again

In the chaos of forest

Branches bend in the wind

They’ll be no rest

Till I struggle again

The valley looks kinder

Upon this mountain ridge

Just another reminder

Of the crossing of bridge

So I rest by still waters

To dream away the pain

The looking glass blurs

With the falling of rain

I stand by the waters

Like a trestle without train

The looking glass is sure

I’ll not shine again

Lightning and the Sun

Took a time out west

To quench my angry veins

I was lost at very best

After I’d buried my remains

The steel wheels turn time

Don’t brake for wildflowers

And the rails steal dime

From gypsy travelers

Don’t you accuse that it came easily

Or assume my days are done

Sometimes it’s hard to see

Between the lightening and the sun

Met a girl who saw with seasoned seas

As dark as the blues can get

Spent nights under the aspen trees

Lost her in winter’s roulette

Bridge washed out from snowmelt

So I had to take a turn

Sometimes the hand you’re dealt

Can feel a little stern

Don’t you accuse that it came easily

Or assume my days are done

Sometimes it’s hard to see

Between the lightening and the sun

The nights play host to shooting stars

Heavens as far as you can see

Sway to the songs of boxcars

Aimed for some distant city

Don’t you accuse that it came easily

Or assume my days are done

Sometimes it’s hard to see

Between the lightening and the sun

Chrysanthemum

Sometimes your letters

fall off the page

worn and wise

burn the sage

ain’t no change

in the wars you wage

sink or swim

still in a cage

Sometimes your letters

arrive unsigned

don’t get me wrong

trying to be kind

my mind goes back

the hands rewind

tried to save all

rescued lonesome

Good Night from Ghost Ships

Welcome to November! I hope you are all doing well. I got brave and did a "thing!" I made a small e-book of my poetry. If anyone is interested, you can find it at the link below. I am only asking a small fee to try and make a little extra money. Being off work sick really messed with things. But, I know, we are all in the same boat. If you want a complimentary copy, let me know, too. I set up the payment where you could choose your pricing...at least if I did it correctly. lol! Thank you all for your support. God bless you and yours!

The Spirit of the Eagle

A dear friend shared something with me and others that has stayed on my mind. It touched me and I just had to write about it. I kept it vague and am not sure it is where I wanted it to be, but here is how it landed, anyway. God bless our Veterans and their families for their service and sacrifices.

The Spirit of the Eagle

There’s a fire burning still

Up on Eagle Hill

Way on back in the woods

Where stories would fill

And last until

Dawn broke where night once stood

Some skies are filled with blue

Others are bright with stars

And the spirit of the eagle soars through

And validates who you are

We’d sit around that flame

And talk every game

And an old eagle would wait

As we share scraps of our lives

Whittled with knives

That eagle shared our plate

Some skies are filled with snow

Others are bright with sunshine

The spirit of the eagle will always flow

Forever in these memories of mine

Some men stand for freedom

Been blessed to know some

I am thankful and I pray

We can all be wise

And honor their sacrifice

The spirit of the eagle way

Birds

I didn’t feed the birds today

Something came up

Drug me down

And that’s where I’ll stay

I noticed the rose on your box

Before you woke up

As I walked to town

No alarm clocks

And I didn’t buy the morning views

Bad news don’t let up

It must be going around

You get what you choose

So I guess the clouds may rain

Time to fill my cup

Drink it down

Rock from the chains

Goldfinch on my porch swing

Like a buttercup

Singing her sound

What a joy she brings

The Station

This morning seemed longer

Than all the ones before

So I went down to the station

And sat by the door

The travellers were plenty

But didn’t notice a thing

Lost in my memories

I missed the first train

And try, try, try - as I might

To count the steel wheels

I am lost, losing sight

Of how I feel, what is real?

Now the clouds are a rolling

And the good people run

Afraid for their shadows

And what’s left to come

In the rain I seek refuge

A watchman of kind

Reflections in puddles

Muddled and blind

And try, try, try - as I might

To count the steel wheels

I am lost, losing sight

Of how I feel, what is real?

I head to the steeple,

Where they sing the soul songs

And in the parking lots

All bets are wrong

I prayed for the waters

To steal me away

But the rumble of cars

Kept me at bay

And try, try, try - as I might

To count the steel wheels

I am lost, losing sight

Of how I feel, what is real?

Gambling on a ticket

That I never bought

Counting my blessings

Ending up with naught

You’re a spark in the darkness

Upon this worn and long rail

Shooting stars on the tracks

Where no one can tell

And try, try, try - as I might

To count the steel wheels

I am lost, losing sight

lullaby of raindrops

A lullabye of raindrops

Dance on the rooftops

And it doesn’t dull my cry

Lances stop the firefly sky

Will you be true

When what you need

Fills the blue

Then cuts and bleed

Wash it all away

In the sidewalk lines

Watch it all decay

You hide chalk outlines

A lullaby of raindrops

Glance from the sail tops

And your hull will die

Chance storms you by

I always knew

You would not plead

You’ld drag me through

Every reed

Wash it all away

Ride the skylines

Don’t you know I pray

When the sun don’t shine?

A lullaby of raindrops

Pine Mountain Prayer

This was inspired by a friend's sharing of a special place for him and upon research, learned of how many people call this dear mountain their home.

Pine Mountain Prayer

Won’t you take a roam with me

Wander Laurel Branch Holler

There’s so much to see

Oaks have grown even taller

Over forty of my years

I have walked this mountain land

When the sunny season veer

Holly and mistletoe in hand

Between seasons fall and spring

There’s a bit of magic in the air

What a gift that she brings

With her Pine Mountain prayer

Pine Mountain has a prayer

She whispers in your ear

Everytime I go wander there

There’s something new to hear

Some days I read the gospel

Some eves I stare for stars

Far away and thoughtful

On this mountain side of ours

Cardinals and wrens watch if

A passerby should toil

A pine sprung from a cliff

Adorned with ribbons, shells, tin foil

Pine Mountain’s in my soul

As I go about my day,

Praises to extol

So blessed in everyway

Pine Mountain has a prayer

She whispers in your ear

Everytime I go wander there

There’s something new to hear

This prayer of Pine Mountain

Carries me everywhere

No matter the place I’m in

I have my Pine Mountain prayer

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Thank you for your support over the past year. 2020 has been a rough year and we have all prayed and relied upon one another to see us through. The coming year will see joys and strife, and we must continue to look out for one another and take care of the people who are in need. Please take a few minutes everyday to pray for those around you. Take another few minutes to notice if someone needs help with something. It may be they need a shoulder to cry on, a limb remoed from their yard or a few groceries. Love is all. God bless y'all!

Just Another Empty Bar

Just another empty bar

Dusty tables. Unchalked cue

Just another empty bar

No rocks and ain’t no whose who’s

And I don’t know, who you are

I can tell you paid you’re dues

I don’t know who you are

But we both got these old blues

Just another empty bar

So I am wanderin’ out the door

Just saw a shooting star

In the alley, all done for

Don’t plan on going too far

You’re gettin’ hard to ignore

Almost to the reservoir

Don’t know what I’m looking for

That crescent smiles from afar

You do whatever you choose

Whose gamble is it of ours

Somebody has got to lose

Head on down the boulevard

Think about all we been through

Wonderin who we really are

Old Psalm Church is in our view

Led by that shinin north star

I know what I have to do

Sometimes the dark hides a scar

Salvation is a cut through

Just another empty bar

On the corner avenue

Just another empty bar

Walk on by, psalm 42

You’ve cast your spell on me

It’s been a dark, dark night

But I can finally see.

Wake on up, moon shine

Won’t you show your silver soul

I had to walk downtown

In a smile that I had stole.

Smoke trees are sleeping

And there’s a rustle in the wood

I know the wolf well

He’s so misunderstood.

The fire flies are lanterns

Leading me along my way

Wake on up, moon shine

I don’t want to wait for the day.

My time is waiting

Like a fiddler on the square

Fill his cup with coins

If you have a few to spare.

The broken, brick facade

Of the old general store

Catches the shadows

That evening time cannot ignore.

Wake on up, moon shine,

I see you in a cloudy halo

I’ve got to take my chances

I just can’t let you go.

Wake on up, moon shine,

Dreams appear before your eyes

Won’t you walk with me

Until the sweet sunrise?

Rough Around the Edges

I didn't make a post for Decoration Day, although everyday I am thankful for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. I wrote this song and my dear friend, the late Kent Bilbrey arranged and recorded it. He. had big plans for this song, and two other artists I know that were involved in it were Terry Phillips and Outlaw Willie Franklin. Kent was a proud Air Force Veteran and loved this song. Thank you to all who have served and to all who have paid the saddest sacrifice of war...

Sidenote, the track was too large to share on Reverbnation, and editing it lost clarity. So, I uploaded it to this site to share. Thank you for your support, always.

1936

something different that I jotted down....

1936

Come with me, to the picture show

We can walk there in the Tuesday snow

Greta Garbo, something we’ve seen

Not sure whose going to light up the screen

Mama’s listening to Bob Crosby

A parade she only sees

She’s with her broom, me and my groom

‘In a little gypsy tea room’

So I may daydream as I tend the line

Cold old clothes soaking sunshine

Feed the livestock, wood in the box

I can’t quit thinking of our talks...

Come with me to the picture show,

Pocket of pennies, be my beau

Clark Gable, Call of the Wild

Don’t say you see me, as just a child

Daddy’s fussing with his Cabriolet

Says I may get to drive it on a summer day

He’s at the wheel and all that I feel

It’s your heart, I want to steal

So I may daydream as I tend the line

I’m just wanting you to be all mine

I’ll be by when my dress is all dry

Wait for me under twilight sky

Shine

Shine

Sterling lines on the roadway

Like a thousand twinkling stars

And you tried to make me stay

In those winter days of ours

Now my time is almost spent

My hand was never enough

It’s hard to say what I meant

Was it a rook or a bluff?

So put me in a pine box

The sunny side of the ridge

Gather up some river stones

From ‘neath that ol’ covered bridge

Don’t forget to say a prayer

Over this old soul of mine

Promise on your darkest nights

That you won’t forget to shine

Sands fell through the looking glass

On those beaches we made waves

Wildflowers in the sweet grass

Mountain waters where He saves

Took too many a gamble

Turned tables, poor man’s roulette

I tried to change my amble

I was too much in your debt

So put me in a pine box

The sunny side of the ridge

Gather up some river stones

From ‘neath that ol’ covered bridge

Don’t forget to say a prayer

Over this old soul of mine

Promise on your darkest nights

That you won’t forget to shine

December's Gone

This is one I wrote back in 2014 about how the giving season seems to end after the holidays...be sure to always look out for others, no matter the season. The late Kent Bilbrey recorded his version of this song. If anyone is interested in giving this song some new life, let me know. :)

Cold rain falls downtown

Yet she wanders on

As it turns to snow

Linger till the dawn

The face was kind

Offered Christmas cheer

Now the empty street

Fills her full of fear

See, no one is there

When the nights are long

Who is going to care

December’s gone

A little doll sits

Near the angel tree

Wonders about the

Giving family

That gave her a smile

Inside these cold walls

Every heart needs love

When you feel so small

But no one is there

When nights are long

Who’s going to care

December’s gone

His tired, weathered hands

Waved down a semi truck

Driver drops him off

For a change of luck

Forgotten and lost

by the life he knew

The tours of duty

Had taken their due

But no one is there

When nights are long

Who’s going to care

December’s gone

Love

One December night

I saw a paper doll

Standing in the rain...

And I couldn’t believe the sight

The storm did not at all

Tear her apart in vain...

I knew her from some other time

Back when we were too young

And the clouds had yet to collide...

Their church bells did chime

The vows were sung

7 years later she ran to hide...

She doesn’t see me, across the street

She spends her time in the garden

And smiles at the sunshine...

The season warms her bare feet

And the winters harden

And her grace gathers lines...

And the virgin mary grows moss

And sleeps by the sidewalk

But I am ever watchful for her...

In this life if we bear loss

A lamb torn from the flock

A shepherd patient among the larkspur...

One Tuesday they took her away

She did not return for a week

I had squandered my time all wrong

The sun shone so brightly on that Wednesday!

I took her violets and kissed her cheek

She asked what had taken me so long!

A Merry Christmas song...

Have you ever walked past a building or church and could hear what was happening inside but felt too awkward to go inside? Like you did not belong, yet you had as much right to be there as anyone else? Or have you ever walked past a stained glass window and thought about how the sun shines through it into the building or church, but no light shines outward from it? The more I overthought this idea, the more I knew I had to write about it. Often times we get so busy in our lives that we are wrapped up in the processes, the plays, the songs, the order of which every little thing must take place. We have to remember to stop and realize it is all nothing without loving all around us. If your life has become too much of a ritual, stop the expected things and do new things. Spend a day at a soup kitchen, visit a Children's Hospital or a Nursing Home. You absolutely do not need to spend days at shopping centers and malls during the holiday season. Christmas will come and go. But the spirit must remain all days of the year. Think about the examples you are setting for your children in your routines and choices. Do you want them to recall you fighting for parking spaces or having fun passing out socks and cookies to those in need? Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! May we all be better than we were yesterday, in His name....

On the Outside, Looking In

On the road to my redemption

I set up camp at Jubilee

And all of my frustrations

Poured from within me.

Christmas adorned the sidewalk

I watched stained glass bend the light

Away from the outsider

Yet inside was glowing bright!

The bells rang and the people came

Rushing past my gaze

I wanted to do the same

And share to Him my praise!

But they closed and locked the door

Before I could work up my nerve

In worn clothing and tattered mind

I was unwelcome to serve.

The sun shines, then dims

On this old stained glass pane

As the hymns for Him

Again and again are sang...

I caught up with my reflection

In shop front window scenery

I wondered what this life

Had in store for me...

On the outside looking in,

I see light so differently

Perhaps it is the Father’s vision

He set forth for me.

In the salvation of the sunset

My spirit burns within

What a beautiful miracle it is

To be on the outside, looking in...

I worked as a carpenter

In my father's shop downtown

We crafted ornate tables

For families to gather around.

My hand became my enemy

After his untimely death

I couldn't focus on the filigree

And I struggled to keep my breath.

I lost all that we had worked for

And the streets became my home

In the winter of my life

Outside looking in, as I roam.

I watch hurried shoppers complain

And tired children cry for rest

People too busy to notice

They are lost, they're so stressed.

Oddfellows on the town square

Selling Christmas trees and wreaths

Old men and veterans

Shivering in the breeze.

I caught up with my reflection

In shop front window scenery

I wondered what this life

Had in store for me...

On the outside looking in,

I see light so differently

Perhaps it is the Father’s vision

He set forth for me

In the salvation of the sunset

My spirit burns within

What a beautiful miracle it is

Mourning Sky

I wrote this after the 9/11 tragic act of terrorism happened. I am sharing it by request. Thank you. May we all continue to pray for one another as we still stumble through the horrors of that day.

Mourning Sky

Won't you tell me why
you took the light out of
the morning sky

So sad inside
but I can't hide
my soul has died
after waking to mourning sky

Crying blind
trying to find
a place in my mind
without mourning sky

Take away the tragedy and all that's left is demented hypocrisy
leave alone my will to survive it's been a long time I've been alive
mourning sky

I fight the inner hate
never thought it was too late
that changed the day that fate
broke the mourning sky

Mourning sky
mourning sky

Clinging to hope
that life remains
mourning sky
feels the pains
sky tumbles forth
and out of the blue
hate grasps the life
of me and you
mourning sky

He Built A Bridge Upon This Mountain

His hands were rough and ragged

Working carpenter by trade

Carving out his lonely world

In everything that he made

He strummed softly on his strings

After hours in the sun

And watched the full moon rise up

Another day of work done

He built a bridge upon this mountain

Not for mortals or for cars

For earthly, weary spirit

Under Smoky Mountain stars

He built a bridge upon this mountain

Leads to Jupiter and Mars

He’s in an amethyst mist

Under Smoky Mountain stars

One evening I asked him ‘why?’

As he appeared by the rail

He faded into the dawn

Apparition with a tale

I watched for him all the day

It sadly occured to me

He was simply passing through

His soul had to be set free

He built a bridge upon this mountain

Not for mortals or for cars

For earthly, weary spirit

Under Smoky Mountain stars

He built a bridge upon this mountain

Leads to Jupiter and Mars

He’s in an amethyst mist

Under Smoky Mountain stars

Nights in Little Greenbrier

Studying the galaxy

Over by the fairy fire

Alone here in Tennessee

He built a bridge upon this mountain

Leads to Jupiter and Mars

He’s in an amethyst mist

Under Smoky Mountain stars

Lying awake

Here is a new one I wrote. rather rough, needs some sparkle still...

While this old city is under stars

I lie awake, wonder where you are

Fire dances with the old north wind

Took my chances on you again

The years have been so kind to you

Don’t know what my life’s coming to

While I rode those empty railways

You went and chased your own freeways

Now here I am, waiting for you

Find some new place worth running to

I fight my darkness, don’t know how

To find your light and settle down

You know my secrets, like a child

You’re a stray flower, growing wild

While this old city is under stars

I lie awake wonder where you are

Gentle breeze in the morning sun

Awakens me, the dark is done

I call out for you, no one there

Searching for you is such a dare

Think I saw you in pouring rain

Evening storms that we can’t explain

You take my hand, lead me on home

I take the wheel, still have to roam

Now here I am, waiting for you

Find some new place worth running to

I fight my darkness, don’t know how

To find your light and settle down

You know my secrets, like a child

You’re a stray flower, growing wild

While this old city is under stars

A messy song

I wrote this one but I can't really come up with a title other than "a messy song." haha! Hope you enjoy the story. Thanks, as always, for your support!

He boarded up the ol' bait store

Put a lock on the outside door

As he walked away, I heard the old man say

Folks just don’t go fishin’ anymore

They torn down the ol “Blue Plate,”

Newsprint tables, I used to wait

You could get a mess of greens, country fried things

I guess it must be fate

But life goes on and on and on

It’s a story, It’s a song

And sometimes it’s glad, sometimes so sad

But we have to remain strong

The seamstress shop went up on flames

Of course, it was such a shame

It held my wedding dress, it was such a mess

And nobody’s naming names

He’d been the barber since ‘67

But when his son was sent to Heaven

He closed up the place, such a sad face

Oh, what a mess we’re in

But life goes on and on and on

It’s a story, It’s a song

And sometimes it’s glad, sometimes so sad

But we have to remain strong

We grew up here on this street

Know every crack in this concrete

Sometimes it don’t feel, like it was ever real

Memories feel so bittersweet...

But life goes on and on and on

It’s a story, It’s a song

And sometimes it’s glad sometimes so sad

But we have to remain strong

Tonight's Lullaby

When sunshine rusts into stardust

Turquoise beams into indigo dreams

With brier by her, she spins her spire

In the forest you must trust

Her schemes of silver seams

Foxfire admires her silken wire

Focused, she hocused the unjust

The stream screams for a gleam

She tires as her empire is spun

An old poem

Way back, well...way, way way back in 1989 I wrote the following poem. I was a freshman in high school and into dark heavy metal music. I wanted to write something that had depth and spoke of something other than the typical love vs hate. When a few of my friends saw it as we were dressing for gym, they freaked out. They said they really liked it. I still remember and it still makes me smile, even though it is a dark little poem. I barely ended up graduating high school. My history class and my math class has failing grades. Math and history just did not seem important then. Hanging out with my friends and getting a job were in the forefront of my mind, hasty as it was. My history teacher saw some writing I had submitted to the school's literary magazine. He asked me if I really wrote it. I told him yes, I could recite it. He passed me with a C. He then asked me if I had other failing grades. I shyly told him I did in math, a 65%, an F. He asked me who the teacher was and called her. They discussed my writing. She passed me with a D. I do wonder looking back if I had actually studied what my grades would have been. I do think school is important, but most of us realize long after the fact. A few years ago a music friend saw my old, worm copy of the lit magazine and read this and a few others I had written that were published in the magazines. He was speechless and told me that I must share them. I guess today is as good as yesterday! Anyway, I hope you find the poem interesting. Thank you for reading!

Memories

Memories of the morbid faith,

Tears stream down my face,

Awful anthems they made us sing,

I felt so out of place.

Antebellum, when all was calm,

Your anterior age was screaming,

As you struggled to remain a fighter,

The devil began his scheming.

An argus, you watched over your space,

A member, you stood next to them,

Questioning your mind and credences,

How can you give into him?

Answers that surrender,

You're coming home at last,

Much too late, I fear your arrival,

It seems we've killed your past.

Until...

I rode a southside train

Til I ran out of change

Left me stranded in a garden

On some forgotten grange

I walked about a mile

Til I seen a friendly face

He laughed and scolded

You better get out of this place

He took me by the hand

Til I could see nothing but dust

Clouds were passing through

Shrouded in rust

I asked how far to the train

Til I could make my way home

He looked away and muttered

Only as long as you roam

We flew by daisies in fields

Til the sun sank in our skies

And the stars danced along

And never asked us why

The mornings were fire

Til the night cooled the quake

And the heavens whispered sleep

Yet we were always awake

One morning I walked away

Til I found the southside train

I wonder if he looked for me

It still brings me pain

Happy 2019!

Here is one for the old and new...

A time will come

When I no longer see

Will you walk

Beside me?

When my youth

Begins to fade

And the memories

We made...

A time will come

Just wait and see

Will you walk away

Or remember me?

Darkness casts it’s

Own afraid

Stow me away

From it’s shade.

Sunshine lends

It’s wrinkled hand

Leads you to

Some wonderland...

A time will come

Where you are free

No longer in need

Of what you see.

The moon will shine

And trees will bend

In silvery strands

Spinning wheels mend...

A time will come

Of new days to spend

Will you wait for me

My only friend?

Cold In Carolina

I would like to share a new song with you all, Cold In Carolina. I wrote this one about a year ago watching the snow flurries and thinking about mountain times long ago. It's not really derived from any real situation, just more about sitting and thinking too much, because it is too cold and messy to do much else. Once again, Eric Yanis arranged and recorded the lyrics. Thank you, Eric!

Autumn

Skies don’t hesitate to

Bring on the blue

She driving down the road

But don’t know where she’s going to

The words she longs for

Never made it past the door

He wanted to go and see her

But in his heart he wasn’t sure

So she dies a little inside

Oh, they both took that ride

And although she’s fallen

She’s hanging onto autumn

Lights up in the sky

Want to be stars in her eyes

The leaves continue their spiral

Diamonds are just a jewel

The words she longs for

Never made it past the door

He wanted to go and see her

But in his heart he wasn’t sure

So she dies a little inside

Oh, they both took that ride

And although she’s fallen

She’s hanging onto autumn

He looks out into the night

But he doesn’t see her light

He knows she won’t try again to call

What he don’t know - is that she’s taken that fall...

The words she longs for

Never made it past the door

He wanted to go and see her

But in his heart he wasn’t sure

So she dies a little inside

Oh, they both took that ride

And although she’s fallen

She’s hanging onto autumn

Seasons on the Sea

His dark eyes are lost in the sunset

His mind is back in Cherokee

These waters are trying to threat

No longer on the banks of the Luftee

I was raised a son of a gun

No elders cared for me

He is from the mountain

And I was born of sea

These seasons on the sea

They salt the hungry soul

Like tears, they disagree

As the years take their toll

Hopeful words lie stationary

Yet somehow they save

Letters that hold the key

To the treasure I never gave

I tell him we are all at sea

No matter what’s beneath our souls

He smiles and looks away from me

I cannot fathom what’s below

These seasons on the sea

They salt the hungry soul

Like tears, they disagree

As the years take their toll

The seawater floods my eyes

The stormfall is like a henge

He looks to Great Thunder and cries

All of our regrets avenge

Where the waters greet the shore

And the clouds cape the creek

We are anchored evermore

To the treasures we fear to seek

These seasons on the sea

They salt the hungry soul

Like tears, they disagree

As the years take their toll

Take a little mountain...

They came to this mountain

To learn more about old ways

They sat by the streams

And washed their worries away

Majestic birds sang to them

They drank from our jars

Creeks danced with their children

Darkness wrapped them in stars

One early morning they awoke

And packed and went back home

Fighting traffic and the harshness

Of overcrowding and alone

They became so overwhelmed

And forgot the mountain way

They let material take their hand

And it led them far astray

Come home to this mountain

Let her branches rock you to sleep

Forget about your struggles

Here what you sow is what you reap

Do not forget the mountain

It will always be there for you

And don’t forget to take a little mountain

Wherever life leads you to

Goodnight story...

He was cold blooded and able

Ready to settle the score

Money on the table

And a knock at the door

I stood there there silent

I knew my place

Rain began to fall

On my tear streaked face

He didn’t say a word

I fell to my knees to pray

All that he heard

Before we ran away....

Was the sound of the thunder

The crash of the light

Leaving me to wonder

In the dark of the night

The running is easy

But the highway is long

We’d never be free

To right all the wrong

So we crossed all the canyons

And walked along the streams

And when we were done

We set out to dream

The nights grew chilly

The fire crackled blue

I could tell he really

Didn’t know what to do

The war is long ended

But the scars never fade

We both pretended

There’s no blood on the blade

The rage never settles

In my sterling mind

The way the wind carries petals

When the storm is unkind

What I take with me

As I run on my own

Are the lessons he gave me

On fighting alone

August is almost a memory

And I will miss it... I turned 43. I have a wonderful birthday celebration. I am so thankful for family and friends. It has been a rough summer but I am ready for some new autumn adventures. Who is with me?

I have been writing a lot lately. I hope to get some of these words set to sound soon. If you are interested, please let me know.

We have been building a rooster room and hen den. It will be nice to have fresh eggs. I must admit I am a wee bit terrified of the rooster. haha!

Sweet Mimosa, Morning Song

This is the other half or the lullaby...

Sweet mimosa

Open your eyes

Search the soul

Young sunrise

Cardinals and

Bluebirds by two

Sing for sunshine

Sparkling dew

Mountain ridges

Awaken last

Canvased by limbs

Of the past

Morning breaks

The curse of night

Morning glories

Lavender and white

Spin your time

Upon the wheel

Strands of gold

Are what you feel

Time will pass

Before your eyes

Can You See It?

Today I went to pull some tall grasses and stuff from around the center of the garden. All of the rain has made it grow out of control. I got almost the entire garden done and had worked my way to the center when the grasses began moving. Oh! I thought - A snake! But no, it was a nest of turtles! They had been eating well on the tomatoes and living the good life there in the center of the garden. So, I left them alone and decided that whatever we get from around them will be just fine. I then stumbled on what I believe is mullein. It is a wonderful medicinal plant for respiratory uses. An exciting day in the garden!

Winter is coming!

August is upon us and the signs of a bad winter are, too. Since time began, some folks have predicted the severity of seasons by using the signs mother nature gave to them. One is the color of the woolly worms. This one I saw towards the end of July. Almost all black, indicating a very cold winter. If he were brown, or had wide brown rings, the less severe winter would be forecast to be. These huge hickory nuts fell to the ground in July. Another sign, to be prepared for the colder times. Maybe you have seen some signs? Feel free to share them!

The End of July

Storms are rolling in, along with cooler temperatures. The end of July is unseasonable. It has worked out well because we have spent the past week or so doing some outside clearing and garden work. I am plumb wore out and it is only Tuesday. But, it is a good kind of tired. I feel like I accomplished some things, even amid the sorrow I feel over some personal things going on in my life. I do suppose seasons change, but embracing that change is much more difficult. One particular thing I look forward to at this time of year is picking grapes. They smell amazing and you can catch their scent from across the field, even in the right winds from the front porch. It's kind of a promise to me that there are 'bunches' of grape things to come. I have always loved grapes and grape flavored candy and gum. I hope this summer has given you all many things to love and bunches of reasons to love.Keep Me On The Road is a song I wrote after watching and interview with Willie Nelson. My good friend Gene Blair arranged and recorded it. Willie said one of his secrets to keeping going was staying on the road, and he spoke the line, 'keep me on the road.'

Peace, Be Still

It's been a rough few days. I hate to complain, but little is going right. It's okay, though, because God has a plan and He leads me to it.

This is a simple song I quickly wrote down to bring comfort to a friend. The late Kent Bilbrey arranged and recorded it. I listened to it tonight, quite by accident. The timing was impeccable, though. Perhaps it will bring peace to any of you reading this that need a moment to reflect and pray.

Little Brown Jug

This is one that I wrote a few years ago about some of the things my Daddy taught me.

Little Brown Jug

Little brown jug

Growing wild by the tree

On a warm summer day

Daddy showed it to me

I learned about magical things

Though I was just a child

And one of my favorites

Was that ginger growing wild

We had fairies by the flowers

We had trolls behind trees

On warm summer evenings

Daddy showed them to me

He showed me ginseng

And he taught me my roots

That life may bear thorns

Like the blackberry fruit

He teaches me to shine

He taught me about the light

On warm summer mornings

After the darkest nights

He gathers up dandelions

And he turns them to wine

He shares his wisdom

Where the apricots vine

Little brown jug

Grapevine & Appalachian Girls

We have had some grapevine take over a few trees, so we yanked it down. I made seven wreaths from it. I plan to keep one, but if anyone else is interested in one, I will sell them for $10 each. They are large, all approximately 1 1/2 to 2 foot in diameter. They still need to dry out a little, but are big and beautiful. I can text message you pictures if you like to see them.

This song is called Appalachian Girl. It is from Bilbrey Phillips, and was released on their cd, Bilbrey Phillips 1. Check out the great music on their page!

Heaven & Earth

We watch the lightening bugs gather in the grass and rise up in synchronicity around 8:30 almost every night. It is a luxury afforded to those who are able to seek it out and turn off the artificial world. On this particular night, we had been picking blackberries for a while. The moon began to shine through hazy cloud cover. A humid, southern summer in East Tennessee, rich with the noises of nightfall. The lightening bugs surrounded us as we picked the ripe fruit. It was as if we were one with the Heavens. We did not say much of anything because the air almost feels sacred at these moments. You just take it all in and exhale the thankfulness of your blessings into the night breezes. We quit once the darkness set in so much were we not sure if the berries were ripe or not. Heading up to the house, we notice the rabbits have come out to play. Back and forth they scamper in the moonlight. I will probably turn tonight's berries into a cobbler, in Mamaw's kitchen.

The first thing is about magic. There's nothing wrong with a little magic, as long as you celebrate the true reason of Christmas. When my children were old enough to no longer believe in Santa, they were disappointed. But, my mother told them to think about that happy, excited feeling you get right before you look to see if Santa visited that year. That is Santa magic...not the gifts, not the commercialism. The magic is the hope of better things to come, new adventures and things perhaps never seen before. Thank you, Mama, for always making sure our holidays are magical.

The next thing I want to share is about light. My Daddy shared this with me years ago, and every year, just like magic, I have come to appreciate his truthful words more and more. We were going or coming back from the grocery store (I think) and it was dark out. We were going down a road we traveled often, and I noticed the Christmas lights. I muttered something about the commercialism and spectacle of some of the lights. I am really not fond of how Christmas is one big sales pitch. He asked me if I knew why the people hung so many lights. I was surprised by this question and said 'no.' He went on to explain that for centuries, December was the darkest time. Food supplies would be lower, less light, coldness... The reason to celebrate in the midst of this time is to light things up and encourage good spirits and love, in an otherwise dark time. What an epiphany! It has never really struck me as that way before. Of course, religious reasons are there, too, but there is no doubt that all of the things we celebrate are tied together in this idea and calendar. Thank you, Daddy, for teaching me to recognize the light.

We all celebrate a little differently, but may you all enjoy the season blessed with magical light!

Mourning Sky

I wrote this after the 9/11 tragic act of terrorism happened. I am sharing it by request. Thank you. May we all continue to pray for one another as we still stumble through the horrors of that day.

Mourning Sky

Won't you tell me why
you took the light out of
the morning sky

So sad inside
but I can't hide
my soul has died
after waking to mourning sky

Crying blind
trying to find
a place in my mind
without mourning sky

Take away the tragedy and all that's left is demented hypocrisy
leave alone my will to survive it's been a long time I've been alive
mourning sky

I fight the inner hate
never thought it was too late
that changed the day that fate
broke the mourning sky

Mourning sky
mourning sky

Clinging to hope
that life remains
mourning sky
feels the pains
sky tumbles forth
and out of the blue
hate grasps the life
of me and you
mourning sky

Ain't No Such Thing As A New Barn
As I have been traveling, I have noticed so many barns in disrepair. Some still in use, but many more not. There's something that fascinates me about old barns. I can try to imagine simpler times, tough times... Every barn tells a story. I have also noticed no new barns. I am sure they are out there, but I have only seen prefab buildings, or the buildings with siding. So, I wrote this about it. Hope you enjoy it.

Ain't No Such Thing As A New Barn
Verse 1:

On a Sunday drive to clear my mind

But the ride was getting long

All the roads I rambled blind

So many sights from yesterday gone

An ol barn on the county road

Sunken in and falling down

The weather’d done it all bowed

And there wasn’t a farmer around

I pulled over to the stall doors

To take a look inside

At what used to be so much more

Now had lost most of it’s pride

A fellow came wandering over to me

He thought he knew what I was thinking

He said we ordered us a new building

This one is rotten and sinking

Chorus:

There ain’t no such thing as a new barn

No one wants to repair the past

Sweat running from your face, down your arm

As you nail one board to the last

Ain’t no such thing as a new barn

The wood came from some of those old trees

You can spin up any kind of old yarn

Buy any new building you please

There ain’t no such thing as a new barn

Verse 2:

Now he thought about this and he looked down

Said you’re onto something there

I remember when the neighbors came around

And we built this barn on a prayer

You don’t see new barns, or neighbors

Everybody’s got some place to be

Nobody no more knows about the labor

And how running a farm ought to be

We stood there in quiet reflection

Of all the times that come and gone

And agreed the barn’s best attraction

Was representing how it was hanging on

I guess I saw a little of me in that barn

I saw a little of you, too

Though the years may have done their harm

We still have made it on through

©Beth Sutton

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to all of you! Thank you for a fabulous 2016! I can not wait to hear what lies in store for 2017.
I wanted to let you know I have been traveling a bit. I have been sharing this site, Sutton Aquarius, along with The Knoxville Sound all over the United States. I have been sharing our Into the Blue project with police officers. I have been the humbled recipient of many hugs and tears. Charles Richardson and Sande Sue Riggs - your hard work and music is appreciated all over the country.
I have also been sharing the news about the Gatlinburg and Smoky Mountain fires. People in every state have offered their prayers and kind words. I have had a few come up to me after they had time to listen to our song, and tell me how moved they were. No one has donated via this site, but I feel confident that people may have donated or became involved in other ways. Thanks to Gene Blair, Perry Bonck, Scott Neubert, Steve Holland, Sande Sue Riggs, David Hawkins and Heidi Monika Johnson for all of their hard work.
The Roadside Recordings section has been a popular place for truckers and travelers. Thanks to Gene Blair for all of his hard work on the songs there.
2017 is wide open and more music is on the horizon. To be a part of this site or The Knoxville Sound, just send me a message. At least one of us has a project going on or a charitable cause needing your participation at any given time. :)
Thanks for all of your support! Let's rock 2017!

Merry Christmas

The sun shines on
This ol’ frosty ridge
Cardinals hoping to find
Seed on the lawn
Just a smidge
Tennessee on my mind...

Chimney smoke fills
The evening skies
Blends into the Heavens
Mountains grow still
Until the sunrise
As Christmas begins...

I took a ride
Away from there
Oh how I wish to be
Mountainside
It’s my prayer
Christmas in Tennessee...

It’s not a time of day
Or hour at night
It’s just a feeling
It’s the way
It’s the light
Immersed in healing...

The moonlight
Casts a glow
Across December’s freeze
Glitters in the night
On the new fallen snow
Christmas in Tennessee...

Down the Old Road
Good morning... I have a special announcement to make today. A few days ago I posted lyrics I wrote about the terrible fires in Gatlinburd and the Great Smoky Mountains. I have been blessed and humbled by the hundreds of shares and comments. Some wonderfully talented artists wanted to record the lyrics. So, we now have a page here with their hard work. Thank you to everyone involved in this project. It has been an emotional, yet, uplifting project.

Please visit the page at:

Down the Old Road

Be Mine
A dark love story for the evening...

Be Mine

He sat there on that mountain
Underneath the coal black sky
Holds her hand as she slips away
He was too damn tired to cry
The preacher said a few words
And left before the sun did shine
He didn’t need no time to mourn
And he didn’t care about feeling fine

He had loved her through it all
Yet she had roaming eyes
He learned of her cheatin’ ways
He learned of her lies
But by then the sickness had stricken
She was on the decline
He waited by her bedside
Till he could go back in that mine

Forty years of dying underground
To see a life for that doll’s eyes
But sometimes a man just cannot win
No matter how hard he tries
The mine was dark as hell
And as cool as her design
And no one was around to see
When he took her where the sun don’t shine

She looked around with her last glance
And she gestured to the skies
He told her he had always loved her
But sometimes that love dies
Neither would see the light of day
Not a drop of morning sun shine
He had one last dying wish
To spend eternity in that mine

Goodnight from Ghost Ships
Another goodnight tale...

Lost trips, ghost ships
Travel the mind
When you’re out of reasons
No one is kind

In a corner
Of the Heavens
She’s there
Like a haven.

Good night
From ghost ships
and lost trips

She can dance
Though the waves crash.
Hold her, you’re found
though you may drown

She’s not an angel
But you’re not a saint
she’s got good intentions
But she knows you ain’t

Good night
From ghost ships
and lost trips

Good night from islands
We’ll never flee
Thunder around us
Lights up the sea
She’s just an apparition
You dream so you dare
To journey to places
No man should fare

Keep Me On The Road
When on the way to school, my Daddy always played music. When I was very young, we listened to Willie Nelson often. I've loved Willie Nelson ever since. I recently watched a video with Willie talking about what keeps him going and he was discussing the sadness surrounding Merle Haggard's passing. Willie said, "Just keep me on the road..." I loved that he said that, so much that I immediately wrote this. I hope you all enjoy it. And Willie, if you are out there somehow reading this ol' Tennessee girl's ramblings, thanks for the music. :)
Keep Me On the Road

I set out to see the mountain
And her sweet sunrise
Never thought I’d make it home again
It took a lot of tries
I set out to see the valleys
Their shadows sympathize
I’ve been down about every road
So many asked me why

Some folks worry about the dollar
And the life they think they’re owed
I choose to live life rollin’ free
Just keep me on the road
Spent too much time
In a soul I must have borrowed
Lord, won’t you see the saint in me
Just keep me on the road

I set out to see the cities
That light up the midnight skies
The silence that never sleeps
No matter how hard it tries
I set out to see the countryside
Rows of grain somehow baptize
Keeps you on the straight and narrow
Till you gaze into a runaway angel’s eyes

Some folks worry about the dollar
And the life they think they’re owed
I choose to live life rollin’ free
Just keep me on the road
Spent too much time
In a soul I must have borrowed
Lord, won’t you see the saint in me
Just keep me on the road

The Cherokee

His table was across the room

And we both were gazing through the glass

Watching the Smoky Mountain sunset

Another day had come to pass

I found it mesmerizing to study

The mountain line blending into night

It was as if the ridgeline and the darkness

Could not be divided by any light

The sunset shadows and shades

Were silent and creeping in

I barely noticed as the waitress

Refilled my glass again

The Cherokee across the room smiled

As she carried his plate away

His thoughts given by his glance

It was something that words could not convey

His eyes shone like the debuting stars

That were beginning to glisten in the sky

I could tell he knew many stories

That he would take to the grave when he would die.

I looked back to the ridges

They were fading into the dark

And suddenly that Cherokee was beside me

His eyes were full of spark

He said, Son, it is not about the difference

Of telling the mountain from the night

It is more about what you see

In the darkness and in the light.”

I thought for a moment on this

It was such a revelation to bear

I began to respond to the thought

But the Cherokee was no longer there.

Spoken Word vs Song
Hello friends. I hope you are all doing well. Recently, Eric Butterfield (Sons of the Golden West) recorded one of my spoken word pieces, Whistle Down the Wind. There is such a dramatic difference in his interpretation and mine and Kent's from last year. It is fun to listen to how others "feel" the words.

Here is the link to the spoken word one:
http://suttonaquarius.com/track/912563/whistle-down-the-wind?autostart=true

And click below for the song version.

Thanks for listening and all of your support!

He sent me a version of the song he is working on yesterday and I wanted to share it with you all. I barely recognized it as my lyrics! haha! Let me know what you think. :) It is called Red Lights and Rain. Thank for your support! I will share the final cut soon!
Mama's Bottle Tree
East Tennessee decided she wanted to have a little winter weather. After a mild start to the season, everything is cold, icy and a wee bit snowy in the mountains. I am pretty sure some of the bottle trees are looking extra shiny with their glittery cover. Mama and I have been talking about making our own bottle trees, but neither of us have made one yet. I wrote this about a year ago. I hope you enjoy it!

Listen up now; we grew up
In Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee
Never locked the church door
Didn’t even have us a key
Evil never came ‘round
Even on a cloudy day
It was Mama’s bottle tree
That kept bad spirits away

The Gift of Music
This morning I received a wonderful gift. My friend Gene had secretly recorded a poem I had posted on my blog a few weeks ago. He and I know one another through Face Book. He is a talented musician and writer. He heads up and hosts the East Tennessee Singer Songwriters meetings. They also have a group on Face Book, located at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/253466181393780/ Gene can also be found on his Reverbnation page, : https://www.reverbnation.com/geneblair.
I am humbled and ecstatic that he chose to do this. Thank you, Gene!
The song is called The Church Steeple. Please let us know what you think.

Happy New Year!
It's time to celebrate a new year! Last year had many struggles and reasons for joy. For me, it was a pretty emotional year. I am taking advantage of the new year to begin some new projects and to allow myself to move forward in faith and the promise a 'tomorrow' brings. I always like Mondays. They are a great place to begin fresh. I am sad when I see those who are lost and do not feel there are fresh starts or better days.It always seems like there is a huge push during November and December to be charitable, for good reason. But, all of the charity push seems to dwindle after Christmas. It's like no one is homeless or in need after Christmas. I wrote a song that Kent and I called December's Gone. He did the vocals, music and arrangement/production on it. If you download this song, the money will be donated to a local charity called Clothe My Children. You can learn more about them here: http://www.clothemychildren.com/

We also created another song for them called Common Cause. Any purchase of it will also go to their charity. You can find it on my Music and Spoken Word page at http://suttonaquarius.com/track/919804/common-cause?autostart=true
As always, I appreciate your support. May the new year hold many happy experiences for us all.

Blessings,
Sutton Aquarius

Time flies...
It's been a month since I updated this thing. :) I guess it's just been a busy month. I hope everyone has had an enjoyable holiday season. Today I had to bring all of my herbs inside. I procrastinated back in Autumn when the weather stayed mild. I have only had to bring them in for a few days at a time, twice. The rest of the time they have been outside. Cold weather is looming, so hopefully they will be ok inside through the next few months. I have never kept them through the winter. I usually dry or freeze the herbs and them replant new seeds in early spring. The basil and cinnamon basil are the only two herbs that do not seem happy with their long lifespan. I've got about 40 pots now on a table that has 3 tiers to it in front of a window. Appalachian and Cherokee mamas have a way with herbs, and I am trying to keep that way going. Lavender made a wasp sting on my youngest disappear in under 30 minutes. A mix of cinnamon, lemon and thyme seems to be keeping us well. If you use herbs or plants let me know your uses. We can share remedies and thoughts.

This is a song I wrote about a Cherokee medicine man. I won't reveal if any of it is fact or fiction, but I do hope you enjoy it.
This link takes you to a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQC6FDjncJg

Black Friday
I wrote this yesterday while being overcome with all of the BF ads. I can understand wanting a good deal or wanting to find a special gift for a loved one, but there are some folks who need to blend the occasion with a good deed or three. No matter how you see things, may you have a safe and happy weekend!

The Black Friday Song

We had a lovely dinner
And a piece of pumpkin pie
And settled in to nap
Black Friday was nigh

Green Beans and Mamaw's Kitchen
Well, I tried. We had several rows of green beans that had bloomed and had put on the start of growing beans. I had been covering them with sheets each night and then allowing them sunshine and rain during the day. It just got too cold for them, but it sure would have been nice if it had worked! We had a lot of beans from the garden, so I am thankful for that. Several more kettles full would have been good, though!
When I was growing up, we had a gardening family. Both sets of my grandparents had very large and bountiful gardens. I remember picking many delicious things from the gardens growing up. They would can and freeze all of the extras and it easily lasted though the winter. My Daddy grew tomatoes. I can still remember the taste of picking them in the summer and how juicy they were! Our garden has done okay and this year has been the best. The weather cooperated and that was a big part of it. I hope to fine tune growing a garden this spring. I love gardening and that is something I never thought I would say. I think the satisfaction of it is addictive.

I wrote Mamaw's Kitchen and Kent and I played around with it until it represented both of our families. So many memories of cooking and food growing up...times sure have changed.... I hope it makes you smile in memory of all of the love grandparents give.

A song about Thanksgiving and coming home again...
I wrote this several years ago. The message in it is a little different for everyone, but the idea of coming home again and realized that all along you were on your own is universal. When we become comfortable with ourselves and our lives, even if we are still working to make our lives what they need to be, we find inner peace. Let me know what you think of it. Thanks for your support!

Sad day...
It's been a very sad day reminiscing about my friend, the late Kent Bilbrey. This is his first birthday in Heaven. I am sure he is rockin' the mandolin on some puffy white cloud. He added so much to this world music-wise and humanity-wise. May his spirit continue to inspire and entertain us all. I am thankful to have had such a wonderful friend in him.

He always said Journey was his favorite spoken piece we did. :)

Appalachian Way...
I ache all over this morning. Yesterday I planted the herbs I had been growing in containers over the summer. About 20 I had room for in the house. It was a monumental effort to get them all to a "winter place." I had a reward for my efforts...I received notification I had risen to #5 on the Americana chart on Reverbnation this morning. I am really excited about that. So blessed by the support of others. My gratitude is endless, friends.
So, why did I mess around with all of these herbs instead of just going to the store? I love it! I am learning how to use the herb as medicines and of course, they are yummy with foods. I will keep you posted on how I learn to use them. Maybe we can all share some tips and tricks about this from time to time.
Have a nifty Friday, y'all!!! Thank for your support!

I wrote the lyrics to Cherokee Shine. It's about the natural ways of the mountains and specifically, the Cherokee. I've twisted a mountain love story into it. I hope you enjoy it! Many thanks to Kent Bilbrey and Outlaw Willie Franklin for their work on this one.

Happy Veteran's Day!
May each and every person who has served in the United States Military feel blessings and love year round. My grandfather and uncles served proudly in the US Navy. I have Veterans as family members, friends and neighbors. I thank them all.

The late Kent Bilbrey, a Veteran of the US Air Force, arranged and played music on my spoken word tracks. Although this track is about loss, I want to honor my Veteran friend who arranged it and played the music. Kent and another wonderful friend, Terry Phillips, play music on this one. It is a grim reminder to pay respect to Veterans for their service while they are still among us. I recall we did this in one take and we all cried. I hope this touches and inspires all of us to realize how special our Veterans are. Thank you.
