His hands were rough and ragged
Working carpenter by trade
Carving out his lonely world
In everything that he made
He strummed softly on his strings
After hours in the sun
And watched the full moon rise up
Another day of work done
He built a bridge upon this mountain
Not for mortals or for cars
For earthly, weary spirit
Under Smoky Mountain stars
He built a bridge upon this mountain
Leads to Jupiter and Mars
He’s in an amethyst mist
Under Smoky Mountain stars
One evening I asked him ‘why?’
As he appeared by the rail
He faded into the dawn
Apparition with a tale
I watched for him all the day
It sadly occured to me
He was simply passing through
His soul had to be set free
He built a bridge upon this mountain
Not for mortals or for cars
For earthly, weary spirit
Under Smoky Mountain stars
He built a bridge upon this mountain
Leads to Jupiter and Mars
He’s in an amethyst mist
Under Smoky Mountain stars
Nights in Little Greenbrier
Studying the galaxy
Over by the fairy fire
Alone here in Tennessee
He built a bridge upon this mountain
Leads to Jupiter and Mars
He’s in an amethyst mist
Under Smoky Mountain stars
